Bauer Media Bikes Earns UK Accreditation for Ad- and Sponsor-Funded Bike Sharing

Bauer Media Outdoor

Bauer Media Outdoor said on October 30 that its bike-sharing service, Bauer Media Bikes, had earned accreditation from CoMoUK, the UK charity for shared transport. The assessment covered rider safety, bicycle maintenance and the sharing of usage data. For councils considering the service, the accreditation provides a common standard for assessing how the operator manages its fleet.

The review examined how Bauer maintains its bicycles and moves them between locations to keep bikes available where riders need them. CoMoUK also assessed how the operator shares usage data for local transport planning and national research. The charity reviews its criteria annually with organisations across the sector. Its chief executive, Richard Dilks, said the framework helps councils evaluate operators without having to repeat the same checks.

Bauer’s funding model connects bike sharing with its Out of Home (OOH) advertising business. Sponsorship and advertising can help pay for the service, reducing the need for councils to rely solely on their own capital budgets. Councils can tailor the branding to their area and choose between a system with docking stations and one that allows riders to leave bikes without using a dock. Where appropriate, the service can use existing street infrastructure, including bus shelters.

Bauer provides a dedicated app for riders and handles maintenance and fleet redistribution. The company traces its involvement in bike sharing to the launch of an automated system in France in 1998. It now manages more than 10,000 bicycles across European schemes, including those in Oslo and Antwerp.
