Seoul Cuts Digital Billboard Hours Amid Energy Concerns and Middle East Tensions

Seoul has moved to reduce operating hours of major digital billboards in central districts, citing energy-saving needs linked to rising geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.

According to city officials, approximately 30 large-format screens in the Gwanghwamun and Myeongdong OOH advertising zones will operate two hours less per day from April 6 to April 10. The revised schedule shifts from 6:00 a.m.–midnight to 7:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m.

The measure follows consultations with OOH media operators managing landmark sites, including displays at Koreana Hotel, Dong-A Media Center, KT, and Shinsegae Department Store in Myeongdong.

Seoul said the temporary adjustment is a proactive response to potential energy supply instability, as tensions in the Middle East continue to influence global energy markets. The city also expects the move to contribute to a more balanced urban light environment.

Industry observers note that such measures could accelerate investment in energy-efficient display technologies and smarter scheduling systems across key urban OOH media markets.
