Bauer Media Outdoor UK (BMO) and The Wildlife Trusts are celebrating five years of partnership, with a dedicated Out of Home campaign across BMO’s Adshel Live network – the UK’s largest digital Out of Home network. Over the partnership, the media owner has donated £2m in media space to the charity and installed more than 350 Living Roofs on bus shelters across the UK, including recent deployments on Milestone bus shelters.

Together, these initiatives have helped The Wildlife Trusts reach people where they live, work and travel, while creating small but important patches of habitat for pollinators and urban wildlife.

Bus shelters as part of nature recovery networks

A cornerstone of the partnership is BMO’s Living Roofs, planted roofs on bus shelters that provide pockets of habitat for bees and other flying insects, while offering resting opportunities for small birds and urban wildlife. In dense urban areas where space is limited, these interventions turn everyday infrastructure into part of a wider ecological network and act as stepping‑stones within nature recovery networks, linking larger green spaces and habitats.

This approach is being adopted in a range of local contexts:

  • Several councils have introduced their first Living Roof bus shelters in partnership with BMO, including Barnet, Burnley and York, with plans in place for additional Living Roof shelters funded via advertising revenue
  • In Essex and Bournemouth, new Milestone shelters with Living Roofs are being deployed, adding habitat‑creating infrastructure along key travel corridors

In Derby, BMO’s Living Roofs helped Derby City Council and Bauer Media Outdoor secure a Bee’s Needs Award, acknowledging the city’s efforts to support pollinators and urban biodiversity. For local authorities and landowners, these examples collectively show how media infrastructure can sit within broader environmental strategies without changing its core function.

Louise Stubbings, Partnerships and Creative Director at Bauer Media Outdoor, said: “We know how important good public infrastructure is for our communities, but we didn’t realise just how crucial travel corridors are for our bee population until we started partnering with The Wildlife Trusts five years ago.

In that time, we have built over 350 Living Roofs on top of our bus shelters, giving bees essential places to stop and rest along their journeys. Alongside this, our partnership has helped raise awareness of how we can all encourage biodiversity in our own green spaces through campaigns across our network, supported by £2m in donated advertising space.”

Thirzah McSherry, Director of Marketing, Development and Communications at The Wildlife Trusts, says:

“Our partnership with Bauer Media Outdoor demonstrates how both businesses and town centres can play a meaningful role in helping nature recover. From raising awareness of the challenges facing nature, to creating Living Roof habitats in towns and cities, together we’re helping show that public infrastructure can be part of the solution to the nature and climate crises.”

A modest but meaningful shift in the role of OOH

Pollinators underpin food systems; visible wildlife and green spaces can support mental wellbeing and make neighbourhoods feel more liveable. Even small, fragmented habitats, like those created by Living Roofs on bus shelters, can help people reconnect with nature while proving that biodiversity is not remote or abstract, but part of the places they use every day.

By combining donated media inventory with intentional design, the BMO–The Wildlife Trusts partnership offers a case study in how Out of Home can reflect and support environmental objectives: amplifying wildlife campaigns, giving brands credible contexts, and helping public infrastructure work a little harder for the places it serves.

After five years, the headline numbers are clear: £2m in donated media space, increased visibility for wildlife campaigns, an award‑winning example in Derby and a growing network of more than 350 Living Roofs, including Milestone bus shelters, across the UK. Five Years Wilder shows how Bauer Media Outdoor is building an estate that connects brands, communities and nature, not just messages and screens.
