Seoul Incheon Airport Wins Top Global Award for Operational Efficiency

Incheon International Airport has been recognized as the most operationally efficient large airport in the Asia-Pacific region, further strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs.

According to Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC), the airport received the Airport Efficiency Excellence Award in the “Large Airports Handling More Than 40 Million Passengers Annually” category at the 29th World Conference of the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), held in Beijing on July 2.

The ATRS, a globally respected academic organization specializing in air transport research, evaluates airports worldwide based on productivity, cost efficiency, financial performance, and infrastructure utilization. The annual award is regarded as one of the industry’s most prestigious benchmarks for airport operational excellence.

ATRS recognized Incheon Airport for its continued efforts to improve operational efficiency through digital innovation and infrastructure expansion.

The airport has introduced a range of advanced passenger services, including SmartPass facial recognition departure processing, Easy Drop off-airport baggage check-in, and self-service check-in and bag-drop systems. These initiatives have helped streamline passenger journeys while enhancing convenience and processing speed.

Incheon Airport’s infrastructure investments also contributed to the award. The expansion of Terminal 2 and the operation of a fourth runway have increased the airport’s annual capacity to more than 100 million passengers, reinforcing its status as a mega hub airport. The additional capacity has improved passenger distribution, aircraft movement efficiency, and congestion management.

Kim Beom-ho, Acting President and CEO of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said the award reflects international recognition of the airport’s commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and operational excellence.

He added that Incheon Airport will continue expanding smart services and pursuing innovation to deliver world-class airport experiences while strengthening its role as a global aviation hub.
